History of the Van Gogh House Drenthe

1870

Around 1870, Mr. J.A. Willinge Gratama, public prosecutor in Assen, commissioned the building of the lodgings/public house on the corner of the Schooldijk. This building was unique in that it comprised two storeys and also featured a balcony.

1876

It was sold to Hendrik Scholte in 1876, who was the lodging owner at the time of Vincent van Gogh’s stay (1883).

1880

In 1880, the building was also taken into use as a toll-house.

1904

In 1904, Scholte sold the building to his son-in-law Andries Mol. The building was further embellished with a layer of white plaster.

1926

In 1926, Kruimink bought the building, and retained it for around 40 years. It was then briefly owned by a Mr. Wams before passing into the hands of Mr. Valke from 1965 until the demolition permit was issued.

1997

The Foundation for Van Gogh and Drenthe was founded in 1997 and initiated restoration plans.

1998

The rear section of the building was demolished in 1998 to make way for a new apartment complex.

2000

On Monday 27 March 2000, restoration work began.

2000

On Thursday 30 March, part of the building collapsed. This collapse of part of the eastern façade seriously delayed the further constructions.

2003

The Van Gogh House Drenthe was officially opened on 30 March 2003. The exterior of the building represents how it looked in the early 20th century.
